Ludwig van Beethoven was a German composer and pianist born in Bonn around December 17, 1770 (baptism date), who bridged Classical and Romantic eras with his innovative symphonies, sonatas, and quartets despite progressive deafness.

Early Life

Beethoven endured a harsh childhood under his alcoholic father Johann, who forced intensive music training from age five, leading to his first public performance at seven and employment at the Cologne court by 1779 under tutor Christian Neefe. In 1787, he visited Vienna briefly before returning to Bonn to care for his family after his father's decline, publishing early works like keyboard variations in 1782. By 1792, he moved permanently to Vienna to study with Joseph Haydn and Johann Georg Albrechtsberger.

Career Peak

Beethoven gained fame as a virtuoso pianist, debuting publicly in Vienna's Burgtheater on March 29, 1795, with his Piano Concerto in C major, followed by his First Symphony in 1800. His "middle period" produced masterpieces like the Eroica Symphony (1803), Fifth Symphony (1808), and opera Fidelio (1805), amid hearing loss starting around 1798 and the Heiligenstadt Testament of 1802 expressing despair yet resolve.

Later Years and Legacy

Fully deaf by 1818, Beethoven composed his late works including the Ninth Symphony (1824) with its "Ode to Joy," Missa Solemnis, and Diabelli Variations, conducting despite inability to hear. He died on March 26, 1827, in Vienna from liver disease, leaving a profound influence on music through expanded forms and emotional depth.
